Dr Liam Mullally

I am a researcher and theorist with a PhD in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London, where I taught for four years. I remain affiliated to Goldsmiths as a Graduate School Fellow, and work as a Researcher at the Autonomy Institute, a progressive think tank.

As a scholar, my work falls in the fields of software studies and media studies, with a particular interest in networked communication technologies. My PhD thesis investigated two technologies that have shaped our present – data compression and encryption – drawing links between their technical, cultural, political and economic aspects. A developed version of this work is currently under consideration as a manuscript with MIT Press.

Professional Experience

The Autonomy Institute, Researcher (2023 – present)

At Autonomy I evidence and develop innovative policy proposals for the future of work and public services, with particular emphasis on working time reduction and digital infrastructures. I have worked with local authorities to develop policy pilots, and with employers to introduce working time reductions.

I currently lead our work as a partner in an EU Horizons funded research consortium, helping academics across Europe translate their work into the language of policy and running research to impact workshops. I am also leading a review of the “Future Internet” research landscape in the arts and humanities for UKRI.

Goldsmiths, University of London, Associate Lecturer(2021 – 2025)I have four years’ experience teaching in cultural studies, media studies and film studies, focusing on digital technology, media theory, critical theory and cultural politics. My practice is informed by critical pedagogies, notably that of Stuart Hall.

At Goldsmiths, I designed and delivered student-focused seminars and lectures based on my own research, including small and large group teaching, and designed and marked assessments. In 2025 I received an Advanced HE Fellowship, a professional qualification recognising practice, impact and leadership in teaching and learning.
